Right Materials, Right Time
According to Kerry O'Brien, a construction productivity consultant from Canada, the delivery of the right materials at the right time is critical to the efficiency of a jobsite. For example, if materials are not delivered on time to a construction site:
-
Work flow is disrupted
-
Idle/ineffective time increases as supervisors attempt to allocate crews to different work
-
Changing set-ups to new locations where material is available increases indirect operations time
-
Supervisors and the labor force are de-motivated
If materials are delivered too early, there can be similar consequences to site efficiency and project costs:
-
The extra materials disrupt material flow
-
Materials handling time increases because of the need to move early materials many times to allow other work to proceed
-
There is a greater probability that materials will be damaged
-
There is a greater probability of accidents
